Final Fantasy fan game – you play as Tifa in Devil May Cry style. It features a really short story , few levels, debug room and an arena. So how to prolong it ? By making it insanely hard.

Now, first thing you should know – a gamepad is highly recommended for this game, as you will need to lock on onto your enemies in order to perform most of the special moves.  Beside special attacks which are very long combos, Tifa can also equip and use swords, rings a various other items. Visuals and music are decent and very close to the original game.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Strategy

• Be prepared for insane levels of grinding!
• Chocobos give items when you feed them – the items will double in the debug room
• The gun item is useless
• Add points to HP/STR/DEF and buy hourglass/demi items
• Beating the arena (35 levels) will help you beat the final boss more easily
• Fear the tonberries

I’ve experienced a huge bug with the hourglass (slow time) stuff – couldn’t see at all, so the tonberries would chop me into pieces every time.

And finally, if everything else fails, resort to hex editing the savegame file: orbs are located on 610×05 and the main stats start with 620×05.

Long combos, no keyboard friendly controls, insane grind levels make this game highly unenjoyable.

Selphie Tilmitt is a hottest playable character from Final Fantasy 8. There were many occasions where you wondered if she does have pantsu or is it just a glitch, as the Squaresoft (Square Enix at that time) wasn’t so liberal to just show that publicly. So, basically, it was just a big tease!
Now, more than 10 years later, the proof is finally here, she does wear pantsu, and even has a detailed texture for it – but it looks so weird… if she only had a higher poly count…

Selphie has them in both outfits, but it was never shown, perhaps because of the weird anatomy? (click to enlarge)

Sometimes during the summer started the hype about 10 bit encoding amongst fansubbers, and that introduced playback and compatibility issues with many users. This guide will cover the basic of converting 10bit video to 8bit and vice versa.

Preparation
Xvid4PSP 5 Main tool for the conversions
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Xvid4PSP needs this one to run
MediaInfo Optional , for detailed info about media files

Download and install.

Video Glitches

Open the mkv with the Xvid4PSP and play it. If you see video glitches, change video decoding (video > decoding) from DirectShowSource to FFmpegSource2.

Resizing & Deinterlacing
These options can be found under Video, shortcut keys “R” and “I”.

If your source is interlaced, the program will guess the deinterlacing method, which is prone to errors, and advanced tweaking is often required. However, if you are dealing with a progressive material, just leave it be, no need for you to tweak this panel here.

For upscale, Lanczos and spline methods are recomended, for downscale, bicubic is fine too.

Encoding basics 10bit to 8bit and vice versa (h264)

If you want to encode in 10 bit , choose High 10 Profile (hi10p) and if you want to (re)encode in 8 bit, choose high. That’s all to it, 10bit is just a profile of h264, every other setting is same for 8 bit.

AUDIO

For reencoding, in most cases “copy” is the best solution.
For avis, mp3 192kbs highest quality is just fine.
For mkv, “copy” or flac for highest quality, aac 192 or 256kbit for saving space.

Forced Subtitles

Find this under "tools" > "mkv extract"

If you are encoding your subs directly into the video just use the subtitles > add subtitles option. But, if you want to encode a subtitle from a mkv file, you need to extract the subtitle and all the fonts from the mkv first, then install the fonts and then add the subtitle itself into xvid4PSP.

Test encode 1: Reencoding 10bit video to XviD AVI :

1) Open your video with xvid4psp and check it for video glitches (see above)
1.5) Optional: resize video to 720×408 or 640×360
2) Format : AVI, CC and filtering disabled, Video encoding : xvid, 2pass, 1900k, cartoon; Audio: MP3 192k cbr, best quality
3) extract subtitle and fonts, install fonts, add subtitle to encoding job
4) click Encode

Test encode 2: Reencoding 10bit video to MKV h264 8bit :

1) Open your video with xvid4psp and check it for video glitches (see above)
2) Format : MKV, CC and filtering disabled
Video encoding :  x264 q18 hqs (not dxva 4.1 ready, unless tweaked a bit )
Audio encoding : Copy
4) click Encode
5) since it’s MKV, we can have soft subs, so we need to put them back with mkv merge,
a small tool under “tools > mkv merge”
Run the program, load the original mkv, uncheck the original audio and video, then
load the reencoded mkv and choose the output file.

Click Start Muxing and you are done.

(Some) Advanced h264 Stuff

There are few modes for encoding, bitrate, size, constant quality (crf), constant quantizer and some variations of them available.

For 480p video, crf15 or a 2pass with bitrate between 2000 and 4000 kbps.
For HD video, crf 16 or crf 17. HD 10bit can go as high as 19.
Crf 13 if you don’t want any compromise.

AVC level sets the level for DXVA compability that only applies to 8 bit encodes, if you want to make sure that your file is compatible with all players, go 8 bit, set the AVC level to 4.1 and use 3 b/ref frames for 1080p, 6 for 720p.

Codec preset gives you the option to automate things a bit, a choice between quality and speed. Placebo (highest setting) is never a good option.

Subpixel ME: good practices is to set it at 9 (lesser values give you better speed, less quality, bigger give you small quality increase and bigger slowdown)

ME algorithm | range: multi hexagon / 16, 24 or 32 is fine
Prediction mode: Tempral for live action, Spartial for animation, or set it to Auto

No fast p-skip and 4×4 options give you small boost in quality

Deblocking : negative values give you sharper picture, 0 is neutral and positive values smooth the picture

h264 has  that neat option – you can actually see the file’s encoding setting by viewing it with mediaInfo:

And that eases things a lot –  you can easily spy on your competition and learn a thing or two, but before that, jump here, to get all those parameters explained.
